200 new Bibles Commemorate two centuries of Hungerford's church of St Lawrence
Last Sunday (28 August 2016) St Lawrence's church in Hungerford was packed with around 200 members of the local community to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the building. It was an uplifting morning service presided over by the Rt Reverend Andrew Proud, Bishop of Reading. Central to the proceedings was the Bishop's blessing of 200 new gift-wrapped Bibles along with a beautifully bound larger edition for church readings, all of which were unwrapped there and then by volunteers and distributed around the church.
In his sermon on goodwill, the Bishop said, "We must all reach out beyond the walls of this building to build relationships with many." He later added: "The vibrant community gathered here is truly wonderful, as is the sheer number of people who have attended today."
After the service, the Bishop was presented with a St Lawrence's coffee mug by the Vicar, Rev Mike Saunders, with a wish that he pray for the parish of Hungerford when he indulges in his favourite Ethiopian coffee, a habit developed when he served in Africa for a number of years. Fred Bailey, author of a booklet on the history of the parish church of St Lawrence, then gave an interesting short talk on points of interest in the church building before a lavish barbecue was served in the church grounds.
As part of the bicentennial celebrations, St Lawrence's new website went live as last Sunday's service started. It's easy to access at stlawrenceshungerford.org.uk and contains full details of all church services and many activities.
A Christian church has stood on the site of St Lawrence's since the early 12th century and the current building is the third church to be built here.
Most of our Bible readers print out their Bible reading and very few people use the pew Bibles. How much better it would be if we all opened our Bibles and followed the readings.
So the PCC have decided to buy 200 Bibles for our 200th birthday. We are going to buy hard back NIV Bibles and a matching lectern Bible with the same page numbers and larger print.
If you would like to donate a Bible to the church for use in worship, perhaps in memory of someone, perhaps out of thanksgiving, then please provide the details below and give them together with your payment to George Ham, Neil Marney or Alison Saunders.
- Any words you'd like printed on a label on the front e.g. in loving memory of Joe Soap 1999-2001; or donated by Janet and John with thanksgiving for 25 years married life
They cost £10 each; please make cheques payable to St Lawrence's Church.
Thank you for your support.
